With their proposal ‘Avstikker,’ SAAHA has won the open competition for the design of a warming hut at Skomakerdiket on Fløyen in Bergen.

The warming hut is intended as a gift to the city, aiming to further activate this area for the public and to facilitate extensive hiking and nature experiences beyond the immediate Fløyen area. Skomakerdiket is located approximately a 10-minute walk from the upper station of the Fløibanen funicular.

The Fløibanen runs from Bergen city center to one of the city’s seven surrounding mountains, Fløyen. Today, the Fløibanen to Fløyen is the most visited tourist attraction in Western Norway and the fifth largest in the country in terms of visitors. The line has been in operation since 1918 and recorded approximately 1.6 million boardings in 2016.

The project aims to facilitate outdoor recreation for children, school groups, adult hikers, and tourists by providing amenities beyond the immediate Fløyen area.

‘Avstikker’ extends naturally from the gravel road surrounding Skomakerdiket, while simultaneously extending the existing open space where the stream and trail meet, serving as a natural stopping point on the way toward Brushytten.

The winning proposal seeks, as much as possible, to embrace the qualities already present in the surrounding nature, with Skomakerdiket as the starting point for its placement. The building itself becomes both an attraction and a destination for hikers.

We look forward to further developing the competition proposal in collaboration with the client, Fløyen AS, and future users.
