´The Akerselva river is to be developed as a national and local area for recreation and learning. It will offer rich and varied experiences within an easily accessible, continuous park belt stretching from Maridalsvannet to Vaterland.´
This project aims to restore Gladsmølle, a listed building and one of Oslo’s most important cultural heritage sites, with the utmost respect for its historical and architectural qualities.

Glitner Eiendom has high ambitions for the restoration of Gladsmølle, one of Oslo’s most significant cultural heritage sites, with the deepest respect for its historical and architectural qualities. The project aims to return the building to its appearance at the time of its official listing in 1923, while facilitating a new and sustainable use that will make the building more public and accessible to all. The goal is for it to benefit both its users and passersby along the Akerselva river.

The restoration work will therefore focus on careful planning and the preservation of original elements. We seek close and open dialogue with heritage authorities throughout the process to ensure that all interventions align with the building’s preservation purpose and its new, public function.

Background and historical value
Established in 1736, Gladsmølle is the oldest surviving building along the Akerselva river and a central icon of the district. Originally a paper mill, it represents the area’s early industrial history and features a unique Baroque-inspired wooden architecture that sets it apart from later brick industrial buildings. Although the structure was rebuilt after a fire in 1819, this does not diminish its heritage status or cultural value.

The thorough documentation work provides a solid foundation for the continued planning process. We will maintain close collaboration with heritage authorities to develop detailed plans, ensuring that all interventions are minimal and reversible where possible, while also creating functional layouts with safe fire escape routes.

Through this restoration project, we aim to preserve Gladsmølle’s unique history while making the building more public and accessible to everyone. By combining respect for the past with a vision for the future, we strive to make Gladsmølle a living cultural landmark.
